THE ORIGIN STORY

Atelier Galaxia is the creative practice of Montreal-based artist Jane Alexys - a space where imagination, material exploration, and inner inquiry intersect.

Jane’s work moves fluidly across creative writing, performance, ceramics, textiles, and film photography. Through Atelier Galaxia, she explores making as both a tactile and transformative act, blending craft with storytelling, ritual, and presence. The studio serves as a counterbalance to her professional work in event technology - where she has spent many years working within the film and events industries designing immersive, short-term experiences - and as a return to slower, more sustainable forms of making.

With a background in performance, costume design for theatre, film, and television, memoir writing, and mindfulness facilitation, Jane approaches art as a living process - one that holds memory, identity, and personal growth. Through her long-term work in film and events, she became increasingly aware of the environmental impact of temporary productions and disposable materials. This awareness has led to a deep commitment to sewing and sustainability, guiding her desire to work with textiles in ways that value repair, reuse, and longevity.

As her practice evolves, Jane hopes to expand Atelier Galaxia into a space for teaching sewing skills, rooted in the belief that learning to make and repair clothing fosters autonomy, confidence, and care. Through teaching, she aims to empower people to develop practical skills they can use for themselves and share with their communities - helping reduce textile waste and encouraging more responsible relationships with clothing and materials.

Jane is currently writing a full-length non-fiction memoir exploring her early life and formative experiences in her twenties. Outside of the studio, she is a volunteer at a local food bank and finds grounding and inspiration through yoga and swimming - practices that inform her relationship to care, community, and the body.

Atelier Galaxia is both a studio and a universe - an evolving body of work where craft, creativity, sustainability, and lived experience are woven together.

Atelier Galaxia would not exist as it does online without the generous support of a few incredibly talented friends…
