THE ORIGIN STORY

Atelier Galaxia is the creative practice of Montreal-based artist Jane Alexys - a space where imagination, material exploration, and inner inquiry intersect.

Hi! I am Jane Alexys - the human behind Atelier Galaxia. Nice to meet you!

I believe art, technology, and community are inseparable. Whether I’m building an event for my day job in tech or mending a garment at Atelier Galaxia, my work is rooted in an Anti-Oppression Framework. I am committed to challenging systemic inequity while centring the lived experiences of women, the LGBTQIA2+ community, and BIPOC individuals. To me, sustainability is about more than fabric scraps; it is about sustaining safe, equitable spaces for everyone. If you’re not into that, I suggest you look for another studio!

My practice moves fluidly across writing, performance, textiles, and photography. After years in the fast-paced film and event technology industries, I founded my studio as a return to slower, more intentional making. Having seen the environmental toll of temporary productions, I am now dedicated to textile repair and longevity - valuing craft as a tactile act of storytelling and ritual.

Textile art is inherently radical and political. The garment industry has devastating effects on both the environment and the communities forced to sustain it. I created this studio to actively combat fast fashion by focusing on repair, reuse, and revitalization.

As I evolve, I am expanding Atelier Galaxia into a space for education and connection. I am developing a YouTube channel to share accessible sewing skills and mindfulness practice and meditations, alongside hosting in person mindful art gatherings at the studio. These gatherings are designed to be grounding, intentional spaces where creativity meets presence. I believe that learning to repair and create fosters autonomy and community care and that all starts from a place of caring for yourself!

Beyond the studio, I am currently writing a memoir, volunteering with local mutual aid organizations, and finding grounding in yoga and swimming. For me, art is a living process that holds memory, identity, and the power to transform.

Atelier Galaxia would not exist as it does online without the generous support of a few incredibly talented friends…
